PS5 System Update Fixes PS4 Disk Install Error

A new PS5 system update has fixed an issue that caused PS4 game discs to try to install the latest version of a game, even if it’s already been upgraded. The 20.02-02.50.00 update contains Sony’s usual vague disclaimer that it’s improving system performance ‘, but adds details of another specific change:

“The following issue has been resolved: The PS4 version of the game is sometimes installed from the PS4 game disc, even after the disc version of a PS4 game has been upgraded to the PS5 version.”The issue has affected cross-gen games such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which were released on a PS4 disc and would then unlock a PS5 upgrade when used in the newer console. The error would cause the console to repeatedly try to install the PS4 version from the disc each time it was turned on, despite the PS5 version already existing.

These include another issue with PS4-PS5 upgrades after repairs for a download bug that blocked PS5 version installations, and a new warning system that shows if you are starting a PS4 game on your new console. Sony announced today that it has shipped 4.5 million PS5s by 2020 – in line with the PS4 launch. It is estimated that 10-15% of PS5s in the United States have been resold for profit. If you played PS4 or PS5, you can now see your personal breakdown for last year to see exactly how much you played.
