PS5 stock: what you need to know about buying a console at Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop, Amazon, Target and more

Hoping for a PS5? Stand in line. Sony’s next-generation console was launched in the US about three months ago – back on November 12 last year – but the stock did not match demand and it sold out immediately, in part because ordinary users had to compete with bots and merchants. A few subsequent stock declines since then have played out in the same way. Currently, the only consoles you can buy are marked down to obscene levels on sites like eBay and StockX, often multiple times their market value of $ 400 or $ 500 (depending on which model you want). The console was otherwise virtually impossible to find, with at least one person waiting 36 hours in line to get one at a California GameStop.

Some more good news: Earlier this month at CES Sony has confirmed that a number of games, such as Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Little Devil Inside and Solar Ash, are on track for their scheduled release dates in the first half of the year. So if you already have a PlayStation 5 in hand, there are good times ahead. But for the rest of us, stocks are virtually non-existent.

Twitter is still a source to watch for stock news, even though we are seeing less big stock declines. Instead, retailers seem to be switching to a policy of smaller, more frequent declines that sells quickly and without much online fanfare. In any case, it will take a while before a PS5 can be easily found. But I’ll keep an eye on the stock again, and will update this article if it looks like you can get a PS5.

The PS5 is available in two versions: there is a $ 500 Blu-ray Model and an otherwise identical $ 400 digital version without a disc slot. At this point, people are happy to get their hands on one, but if you do not have a library of optical discs – for Blu-ray movies, used games or old PS4 games – CNET recommends goes with the $ 400 version.

OK, you have exhausted all the online and brick merchants, and you have decided that you are willing to pay a $ 300 surcharge to get this puppy soon. As your friends, we need to tell you: Do not do it. But if you do not want to listen to us, you can visit StockX, an alternative on eBay that made its name in the secondary market for sneakers and designer clothes. The last time we checked it out, the prices of the PS5 were around $ 700.
