Destruction of AllStars is a game about destroying cars. It’s just there, the first word in the title. It’s also an important milestone for the PS5 – a great exclusive exclusively on the next-generation console that’s not a remake or spans generations.
This is a title that will inevitably be used to point out what kind of games developers can make if they get the new features and firepower of the PS5 free rein. But breaking is still the heart of Destruction of AllStars: so much so that the seed of the game was a simple idea. “Imagine how much damage we can do to PS5,” says John McLaughlin, a senior producer at Sony XDev. The edge.
It was a short jump from there to partnership with Lucid Games for development, given the heritage of the studio. Game Director Colin Berry previously worked on Sony’s Obliteration series, while other Lucid members come from other classic car games, such as Metropolis Street Racer, Gotham Racing Project, en Motorstorm. “One thing that was certain was that these guys know cars,” McLaughlin says. And then we basically go to those guys with that seed and say, ‘We want to do something on PS5, with a lot of destruction and cool stuff – what’s your idea, what’s your pitch? ”

The Lucid team returned with another combat car game. As McLaughlin explains, “They came to us, not so much with Destruction of AllStars – the name came later – but they came with the pitch of a game that contains cars, which contains a lot of destruction, [and] destruction encouraged. It was not about hiding for destruction, it was about breaking and getting as fast as you could, and so on. ”
The other goal was to raise the bar for a derby-style game. While older games show damage or clutter, hide behind texture swaps or low-resolution polygons, Destruction of AllStars trying to provide a better experience, according to Berry. As for the PlayStation 5 and what we were told early on about the specs, we can look at distortion and damage and the physics in a way we have not done before, and at a level we have not before. did not. So, if the cars are crumpled, the amount of parts made up of each car, all these wrecks, we can really put the bolt on such things. ‘
The degree of detail in the titular destruction is a big part of why Destruction of AllStars is limited to just the PS5 – even when a PS4 port would open the game to more players, an important thing in a game that is strongly focused on multiplayer modes. A PS4 version would just “not have done the same in terms of damage and libel and physics, actually in the game,” Berry says.
The flip side of that exclusivity is, of course, what happens to Destruction of AllStars following. As a free PS5-exclusive title offered by PlayStation Plus for the next two months, it will almost certainly guarantee a large initial audience, just like the previous PS Plus such as: Rocket League or Val guys reached. Rocket League has become an internet sensation, with massive esports tournaments still popular even years after release. Val guyson the other hand, has largely faded into the background, hampered by new content that has slipped out too slowly after the first few weeks to retain the interest of most players.
“We have a plan, we have a roadmap, not just for the … start window of the game, but for the first three, four weeks later, for a few months later, for next year,” he said. McLaughlin, with new characters, new game modes and more planned for free in the future. ‘We have a plan for the coming year with a schedule of content that I think will keep people entertained and engaged and will make them come back and wonder what they will drop this week, and wonder what they will drop next week. ”
Destruction of AllStars is available as a free download for PlayStation Plus subscribers to the PlayStation 5 for the months of February and March.
