PS2-inspired PS5 design apparently canceled

It seems that SUP3R5 canceled the production of the “Inspired by Retro” PS5 after receiving “credible threats to their security”.

As reported by Video Game Chronicle, SUP3R5 canceled all orders and removed their official Twitter account. In the deleted tweets, they said: “We take these threats seriously. We are not prepared to jeopardize the safety and well-being of our team, or the potential impact it could have on the delivery of your order. ”

The consoles are designed to take advantage of the twentieth anniversary of the PlayStation 2 console, creating a black design with blue highlights. The design also includes the inclusion of the original multicolored PlayStation logo for extra nostalgia.

SUP3R5 initially charged $ 649 for the digital version and $ 749 for the disc drive. The retail versions of these consoles would be about $ 399 for digital, and $ 499 for one with a disk drive.

The company was also willing to customize people’s DualSense controllers for $ 99, at the expense of the controller’s warranty, as the adjustment process requires the controller to be disassembled.

Fans of the PlayStation brand had hoped that the easily removable faceplates would make customizations available, but there were no signs that Sony would create cosmetic faceplates.

The cancellation of the retro PlayStation design comes after an independent company, known as CustomizeMyPlates, wanted to create its own versions of faceplates as third-party PlayStation peripherals.

Sony reportedly threatened legal action against the company and forced them to stop production. As a result, they had to refund all customers who had pre-ordered a PS5 faceplate.
