PS2-inspired black PS5 consoles will go on sale this week

If you manage to beat scalpers and bots, you can place an order for a retro PlayStation 2-inspired PlayStation 5 from 3pm EST on Friday, January 8th.

The US-made SUP3R5 console will be limited to 304 units – a number inspired by the PS2’s original PS2 version of 03/04/00. The starting price is $ 649. SUP3R5 also sells DualSense controllers separately for $ 99 each, and they will be limited to 500 units. Both products will start shipping in late spring this year.

A DualSense disclaimer informs potential buyers that the “retro-inspired conversion process requires a complete disassembly of the device”. This means that there will be no guarantees. If you pull out the controller, you will be short of $ 99 and nothing to replace it. The good news is that the console itself will not be disassembled – only the side panels will be removed during makeup, which does not invalidate the warranty.

“The SUP3R5 team manually adapts the retro-inspired design to each unit, a tedious process performed with the utmost attention to detail and quality,” reads an official description. “The whole process is performed with glove and with the necessary safety precautions so that your console, controller and accessories are not touched by human hands.”

Since a significant portion of the PlayStation community has not yet secured the standard white PS5 that was officially released last year, this may seem like a pipe dream. But it’s worth a try, I think.
