Prisoners in the St. Louis Prison set fire to windows for the third time in weeks

The riot at the St. Louis City Justice Center ends shortly before 10 a.m., but only after the inmates spent hours throwing a stationary bicycle, chairs, mattresses and other items into the streets below did some objects burn.

Dozens of people gathered to watch the riot and efforts to curb it. Flames could also only be seen inside the windows.

Correctional officers used tear gas to regain control and detained all 115 prisoners involved in the riot.

The inmates allege that they were fed up with conditions during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as a series of restrictions that restricted visits and court proceedings, officials said.

Dozens of prisoners were transferred from the City Justice Center after two riots in late December and early January, making the third the third disturbance in such a short time.

“There are some burn marks on the front of the building. They destroyed the inside of their floor and threw all sorts of things outside … They flooded the floors, clogged the toilets, clogged the drains, so there is water damage, “said Jacob Long, a spokeswoman for Mayor Lyda Krewson.

The riot began around 2:30 a.m. after a prisoner and a guard were shoveled and the guard was jumped by other inmates, St. Louis Today.

Jimmie Edwards, the city’s director of public safety, told reporters the judge was injured and taken to a hospital. That guard sustained bruises and bruises and was released later that day.

No other officers or prisoners were reported injured.

The repair facility is located on the fourth floor of the Justice Center, with only glass windows overlooking City Street and no fences or additional barriers around the building.
