Prince Philip supported Princess Diana during her rocky marriage to Prince Charles, says author

EXCLUSIVE: When Princess Diana joins the British royal family, another ‘outsider’ quickly becomes her ally.

Her father-in-law, Prince Philip, was initially taken with the Princess of Wales and was willing to offer support as she navigated her new role.

In 1981, Diana married Prince Charles, heir to the British throne.

“Philip went through the queen literally and metaphorically for seven decades – but he was the backbone of the royals’ private life and supported Diana in her most difficult times,” British author Tom Quinn told Fox News. “He also admonished his sons, including Prince Charles, when he felt their behavior was not good enough.”

Quinn had previously written a book entitled ‘Kensington Palace: An Intimate Memoir from Queen Mary to Meghan Markle’ in which he spoke to those who had worked for the royals over the years.

In excavated letters found after Diana’s death in 1997 at the age of 36, it came to light that Philip offered to surrender a listening when he learned that the princess’ marriage to Charles was on the rocks. Diana has long suspected that Charles had an affair with his ex-girlfriend, Camilla Parker Bowles.

“I can only repeat what I said before,” Philip wrote, as quoted by Woman and Home magazine. “If I am invited, I will always do my utmost to help you and Charles to the best of my ability. But I am completely willing to admit that I have no talent as a marriage counselor!”

In response to this, Diana writes: “Dear father, I was especially touched by your most recent letter, which proves to me, if I did not already know, that you really care. You are very modest about your marriage counseling, and I do not agree with you! The last letter from you has shown much understanding and tact, and I hope to be able to draw on your advice in the coming months, whatever they may bring. ‘

Quinn said Philip was on Diana’s side first.

“When Diana was at her lowest point, Philip wrote to her saying he could not understand why Charles insisted on being with Camilla,” he claims. “He told her he thought Charles was crazy to even think about abandoning her. He had already told Charles that he was crazy about choosing Camilla over Diana whom Philip really likes.”

“Philip told Diana she had sympathy and he told her he would try to talk to Charles,” Quinn continued. “But as we know, Charles would not keep anything away from Camilla. Diana wrote in response to Philip to say how grateful she was that he thought of her and understood her position.”

In another letter, Diana said: ‘I want you to know how much I admire you for the wonderful way in which you have tried to tackle this extremely difficult family problem’, as quoted by UK’s Independent.

However, it is understood that their relationship took a turn when Diana took matters into her own hands. In 1992, Andrew Morton wrote ‘Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words’, a bomb book based on tapes recorded by the Princess of Wales and secretly handed over to him. Diana spoke candidly about her strained marriage to Charles.

Ingrid Seward, royal writer and editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, later told DailyMail in the UK that Philip was allegedly ‘incensed’ about the revelations and accused Queen Elizabeth II of ‘postponing’ the question of whether Charles and Diana should divorce.

“Can you honestly look into your heart and say that Charles’ relationship with Camilla had nothing to do with your behavior toward him in your marriage?” Philip wrote to Diana, as quoted by Seward.

His comments to Diana were stern, and the prince said he wanted her to understand that she was a wife of the heir to the throne, that it involved much more than just being a hero to the British people.

Diana was apparently furious and it is believed that their relationship never recovered. Diana and Charles were officially divorced in 1996.

Despite their differences, Philip acts to support his grandsons, Prince Harry and Prince William, after their mother’s tragic death. The Independent reported that Philip William was comforted after the prince said he did not want to walk in his mother’s funeral procession.

“If I walk, will you walk with me?” Philip apparently told his grieving grandson, as reported by the outlet.

Philip later joined the two boys when they walked behind their mother’s coffin. In February, Harry, now 36, spoke affectionately of his grandparents.

“[Philip] was a controversial figure who found what he saw as intrusive anger, which occasionally made racist remarks and whose bluntness sometimes offended, “Quinn said. for his long support to the Queen. ‘
