The world of sports paid tribute on Friday after the death of 99-year-old Prince Philip.
The English Football Association was among those who paid tribute, while a two-minute silence was held during cricket matches in England’s county championship and during the Grand National Equestrian Championships.
Buckingham Palace announced the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on Friday.
“We have sent our deepest condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and our President, HRH The Duke of Cambridge, on the passing of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh,” said the FA on Twitter.
“As a sign of our respect, all flags at @WembleyStadium and St. George’s Park will fly half mast.”
A later statement confirmed that following the leadership of the Royal Household and the government of Her Majesty ‘all the soccer equipment tonight and this weekend [10-11 April] may proceed at the discretion of competition organizers. Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho also paid tribute at his news conference on Friday.

“His passion for the game we all love was well known and the trophies given to the men’s and women’s championships are a tribute to his dedication to our sport,” said ECB President Ian Watmore. “We owe him a lot of debt for his support and passion over many decades.”
Philip was an honorary member of the MCC and of the Jockey Club, which owns racetracks in Britain.
The silent tribute in horse racing was held before the start of the second day of the Grand National event at Aintree.
