For the first time since his and Meghan’s, Prince Harry was in a relationship with his father, Prince Charles, and his older brother, Prince William. groundbreaking interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this month, Gayle King, co-host of CBS This Morning, said Tuesday.
The talks were not productive, the couple told King over the weekend.
However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they were happy to have started a conversation with the royal family and that they wanted the family to heal.
King said the family should not reach out to Meghan after the two-hour interview.
Harry told Winfrey that he had a difficult relationship with his father after his and Meghan’s decision to step back from their roles as senior royals in early 2020.
“When we were in Canada, I had three conversations with my grandmother and two conversations with my father,” he said, adding, “before he stopped taking my calls.”
While the Duke said he had spoken to his father again since then, he felt he had been “let down” given Charles’ own experience in the past with Harry’s deceased mother, Princess Diana, and her relationship with the British tabloids.
The prince was apparently ‘upset’ and ‘cut up’ to hear what his younger son had said, and ignored a reporter’s question about it the day after the interview was broadcast in Britain.
As for Prince William, who is second on the throne, Harry described their current relationship as ‘space’.
Through the interview, Meghan also disputed a previous allegation that William’s wife, Kate, made Meghan cry within days of her wedding, saying that the reality was reversed.
She and Harry also compare Meghan’s harsh treatment of British tabloids with Kate’s, explaining racism played a role in covering the Duchess of Sussex. They accused the palace of not defending her as they had the Duchess of Cambridge.
Prince William told reporters the royals were ‘very not a racist family’ following the interview. Buckingham Palace issued a statement calling the couple’s allegations, particularly those of race, “regarding”.
“I think what still upsets them is that the palace is still saying they want to work it out privately, yet the false stories that are contemptuous of Meghan come to light,” King said.
Shortly before the interview, it was revealed that Buckingham Palace was also investigating allegations of bullying perpetrated by Meghan by royal assistants. The palace hired an external law firm to investigate the claims.
King said the couple “would not be part of the investigation themselves.”
However, the co-host of “CBS This Morning” said Harry and Meghan were hoping for a less controversial relationship with the family.
“They both want to continue with this and they both want healing in this family,” King said.
