Prince Harry and Meghan donate new roof to Texas women’s shelter damaged in storm

Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, surprised Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support in Dallas on Sunday with a donation to fix the roof of its transitional housing complex and help with other urgent needs.
“We have been informed that Prince Harry and Meghan will make a donation to help us get back on our feet through the actions of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s non-profit, Archewell Foundation,” the shelter, Jan Langbein, said in a statement.

“This gift will not only provide for our critical needs, but also an international spotlight on violence against women and children, and let survivors know that they are not alone.”

Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support is an essential lifeline for families who have experienced domestic violence, giving women a way out in abusive situations. According to Amy Norton, the senior shelter director of fund development, the roof of his transitional housing glowed, pipes burst and furniture was destroyed.

The women and children inside were moved quickly and no one was injured, Norton said.

Millions of people in Texas lost power and water after a deadly freeze began on February 11th. The shelter closed its doors for the first time in 35 years due to the storm, Norton said.
The world is seeing a domestic abuse crisis during the Covid-19 pandemic and some support services have been suspended, according to a special report by CNN on domestic abuse.
Some victims of domestic violence have experienced departure challenges, including a lack of food, shelter, transportation, childcare and job opportunities, according to a study by Rutgers University in 2020. These factors may have put them under pressure to live in communities nearby to live their abusive partners.

This women’s shelter is one of the charities that has supported Prince Harry and former Meghan Markle since they officially relinquished royal duties.

In addition to repairing the roof, the money from the couple’s founding goes to the shelter’s immediate emergency needs, the shelter said.

“Despite the devastating winter storms here in Texas, our hearts have been warmed by the support and generosity of people from all 50 states and five foreign states,” Langbein said in the statement.

Genesis has since reopened.
