LONDON – Samsung on Wednesday debuted three mid-range smartphones in hopes of attracting people with less cash as competition with Apple intensifies.
The new phones are part of Samsung’s cheap Galaxy A series, which has become a popular brand among Samsung customers who are deterred by high prices in the Galaxy S series.
Samsung aims to regain its position as the largest smartphone maker in the world after Apple captured the title in the fourth quarter of 2020. Apple’s new iPhone 12 is the company’s first model to feature 5G capabilities.
Samsung introduces three new models: the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G and Galaxy A72. The new range is an upgrade of last year’s Galaxy A51 and A71 devices. The A52 5G is the only device out of the three that supports super-fast 5G internet.
Specifications and features
The South Korean electronics giant says its new phones have a number of improvements over their predecessors, including a better screen, camera and battery life.
The Galaxy A52 has a bright 6.5-inch screen, while the Galaxy A72 has a 6.7-inch panel. The Galaxy A52 5G features a 120Hz refresh rate, which basically means you can scroll smoother. The Galaxy A52 entry and more expensive A72 models have a 90Hz refresh rate.
Samsung says eye pressure is taken into account, including a feature that automatically adjusts the color temperature of the screen, depending on how a person uses their phone. There is also a music sharing setting that allows users to sync their phone with a friend’s device to connect to a Bluetooth speaker without connecting directly to the speaker.
All three phones feature a quad-camera with a 64-megapixel main lens. The Galaxy A72 features 3x optical zoom, which according to Samsung users can take a 10-meter photo that looks like it was taken just three meters away.
Another important camera feature in the new Galaxy A series is Fun Mode, developed in collaboration with Snap. It’s a tool in Samsung’s native camera app that lets you add Snapchat filters to your photos and videos.
Samsung is also offering a better battery life with its new devices, promising two days of use without worrying about charging the phones. The A52 and A52 5G have a 4500 mAh battery, while the A72 has a larger 5,000 mAh battery.
Price and release date
Samsung’s Galaxy A52 will sell for 349 euros ($ 415), while the A52 5G and A72 will give you back 429 euros and 449 euros respectively.
Samsung has not yet given an international release date for the new phones, but said they will launch sometime in April in the US.
“This new series is an important step in performance and features,” Paolo Pescatore, technician, media and telecommunications analyst at PP Foresight, told CNBC.
“The most striking features are the impressive screen, including the high refresh rate and much longer battery life.”
Samsung’s new budget phones may appeal to people who are not willing to pay $ 1,000 or more for a premium Android or iPhone model.
“The launch is timely and comes at an interesting time, given the series of new smartphone launches,” Pescatore said.
“Although there is great excitement with the arrival of new smartphones, the competition in the mid-range is intense. Samsung has done a good job of packing premium sophisticated features (some of its flagship S21 device) at exquisite prices . “
