The claim: Photo captures speaker Nancy Pelosi reviewing her troops ahead of inauguration day

As tens of thousands of troops guard the country’s capital to ensure a peaceful transition of power, a viral photo of House President Nancy Pelosi thanking the soldiers is misrepresented online to warn of possible military conflict.

Pelosi judges her troops. Is that what we came to? The Facebook page RockIt News captioned the photo in a post on January 16.

The report received more than 12,000 responses, 8,000 comments and 4,000 shares. Facebook users quickly voiced their support for the idea of Pelosi preparing troops for some sort of biased military mission ahead of the inauguration day.

“Although the military would not get involved in political affairs!” a user commented.

“Lord, help the troops. She will have them killed. Her directions will be VERY DANGEROUS to pass,” wrote another.

USA TODAY could not contact Rockit News for comment because the Facebook page has no contact information and the website does not respond.

Fact check: What is true of the Capitol riot, from antifa to BLM to Chuck Norris?

Pelosi thanks national guard

Pelosi’s Deputy Chief of Staff and longtime spokesman, Drew Hammill took the photo and shared it on Twitter on January 13th.

“The speaker of the House thanks the men and women of the National Guard for protecting the American Capitol,” he wrote.

Hammill confirmed in an email to the US TODAY that the photo does not capture Pelosi’s commanding troops.

“I took the picture,” he wrote. “She thanked them in brief remarks.”

Fact check: The image of Lauren Boebert at the protest is from 2019, not related to the American Capitol riot

Pelosi does not recommend troops

DC is hosting more than 20,000 national troop troops in the days surrounding the inauguration of President Joe Biden as a security measure activated by the Department of Homeland Security.

The operation includes troops blocking access to the White House and the U.S. capital, where Biden and Harris are to be sworn in.

The U.S. Secret Service, National Park Service and U.S. Capitol Police have requested the support of the National Guard; troops came from all 50 states, three US territories and DC

Pelosi did not call in or command these troops. State governors and the president can activate the National Guard for both state and federal missions.

Fact check: The Insurrection Act is not in force and is unnecessary in DC

This extended security measure comes after rioters violated the Capitol on Jan. 6 while Congress ratified Biden and Harris’ victory.

Our verdict: False

We rate the allegation that a viral image shows House President Nancy Pelosi leading troops outside the Capitol as FALSE because it is not supported by our research. Pelosi’s office, which took the photo and released it, confirmed with the U.S. today that the speaker thanked the national guard. The national guard is in DC at the request of the Department of Homeland Security.
