Portland riot suspect (22), accused of punching officer, vandalism; arrested twice in one night

A suspect in riots in Portland who is accused of punching a police officer and vandalizing the lobby of an office building was arrested twice on Thursday night.

According to Oregon FOX 12, Darby M. Howard, 22, is facing charges of criminal malpractice, resisting arrest and attempted assault on a police officer.

Howard allegedly hit a flat-screen TV in the foyer of downtown Wells Fargo in downtown Portland and kicked an automatic glass sliding door, which allegedly caused more than $ 1,000 in damage.

He allegedly punched a Portland police officer in the head while trying to arrest him after trying to push through a series of officers. He fell and was arrested, reports FOX 12.

Howard, who arrived in Portland about two weeks ago, was released that evening and re-arrested a few hours later. He is accused of renting a window in the courthouse with a Lime scooter, OregonLive.com reported. Howard told police he had been homeless for the past month.

After his arrest early Friday, Howard was brought in federal court for alleged destruction of federal property, and a judge ordered him later Friday to remain in custody for his “lack of ties to the community” and his disregard for the conditions of his release after his first arrest.

He has been in the Multnomah County Jail since Friday, FOX 12 reported.

Howard was the only protester to be arrested in the chaos, but according to OregonLive.com, three others were cited for disorderly conduct.

Rioters broke out fires and smashed windows in the area of ​​the U.S. courthouse Mark O. Hatfield on Thursday night, and police responded with tear gas and smoke bombs to disperse the rioters.

Thursday’s violence in Portland was expected, with some business owners taking up their businesses earlier in the day, OregonLive.com reports.
