Portland police surround rioters arrested for breaking windows

Police in Portland, Ore., Formed a perimeter and detained about 100 protesters who allegedly broke through a “direct action” window in the city’s northern Pearl district on Friday night.

“You are not free to leave. You must stay where you are and obey the lawful instructions of the officers,” an officer told the protesters over a loudspeaker, according to a FOX 12 reporter in Oregon. “If you try to leave, you will be arrested.”

The official said the protesters were being held for the ‘crime investigation’. He said the failure to comply could result in the use of tear gas or firearms.

The department noted on Twitter that the detention was “temporary” and said the protesters would eventually be released one by one. “Stay calm and wait for directions,” the tweet said. Religious media were allowed to leave.

Police surrounded the group around 9:30 p.m., about 90 minutes after the group began marching, reports KOIN-TV in Portland.

Friday was the first time that the city police, who have been handling almost nightly protest marches since last summer, used the limitation tactic, FOX 12 reported.

Some bystanders around the detainees who were detained shouted, “Let them go!” while others cry, “Close them!” KOIN reported.

The police began to follow the protesters after they began marching from nearby Jamison Square and they notified via a loudspeaker that the group is not allowed for the event as soon as they started walking down the street and traffic barricade. Officers surrounded the group as they vandalized property.

The department advised the protesters in a tweet to “prepare to be escorted by officers” one by one around 10:30 p.m. PT.

Police arrested the protesters late Friday from the “temporary detention” start guide and warned them if they did not comply, they can be arrested. According to a KOIN reporter, some of the protesters took their photos. It was not immediately clear why their photos were taken or how many arrests were made.
