Portland police detained more than 100 people during protest

Portland police raided protesters Friday night, detaining more than 100 people in hopes of preventing a second night of window smashing and arson.

Protesters gathered in the Pearl District, downtown Portland, around 8:30 p.m., but police quickly warned that anyone blocking the streets would be arrested.

Cops around 9:20 p.m. said on Twitter they set up and kept a perimeter around the protesters.

But they said the detention was temporary and that protesters would be escorted “one by one”.

According to OregonLive, a crowd stood outside the area singing and “let them go”, which also reported that policemen sprayed two protesters with pepper.

The protesters who were detained were released after being individually taken down by the police; it was unclear whether anyone was charged with crimes.

Ongoing protests against police turned violent on Thursday when rioters smashed windows near a federal court and set fires. Police responded with tear gas and smoke bombs to disperse the crowds, the outlet reported.

Meanwhile, suspected riot Darby Howard, 22, spent another night in jail after being arrested twice on Thursday, Fox News reported.

Howard allegedly caused more than $ 1,000 in vandalism damage in the downtown Wells Fargo Center on Friday afternoon by storing a flat-screen TV and a sliding glass door; According to police, he hit a police officer in the head while trying to arrest him.
