Portland marchers destroy businesses, government property: police

About 40 people damaged businesses and property in downtown Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday night, police said.

The group met in the city’s director’s park before heading up downtown at about 7 p.m., police said in a news release on Thursday. During the march, members of the crowd broke windows, fired paintballs and spray-painted several buildings, including City Hall and the Portland Police Department headquarters.

Other properties damaged include the Oregon Historical Society, the University Club, First Republican Bank, a Starbucks and several restaurants.

Police said officers tried to contact someone who led the march, but their vehicle was also spray-painted.

No arrests were made. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the vandalism to contact police at [email protected].

Portland came into the national spotlight during the summer after protests erupted in response to the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25. The city was devastated by violence for more than 100 consecutive nights. The protests culminated in late July when President Trump deployed federal law enforcement agents to stop attacks on a federal courthouse and other U.S. property.

According to recent statistics, Portland and other major metropolitan areas in the U.S. have seen a significant increase in crime this year. At least 850 shootings have been reported to date on December 24, which is a 116% increase from the 393 incidents recorded year on year. Furthermore, there was a 93% increase in shootings. This year, 228 were shot, and 118 were shot last year.
