Pope Francis “surprised” by assault on the USA …

VATICAN CITY, Jan. 9 (Reuters) – Pope Francis said on Saturday he was “surprised” by the attack on the US Capitol earlier this week by supporters of President Donald Trump, and denounced the violence as an attack on democracy.

“I was surprised because they are people who are so disciplined in democracy,” the pope told the Italian Channel 5 news channel in his first public comment on the chaos in Washington.

“There’s always something that does not work … (with) people taking a path against the community, against democracy, against the general interest,” he said. (Reported by Crispian Balmer Writing by Giulio Piovaccari Editing by Peter Graff)
