Over the past few weeks, various reports have suggested that the iPhone 12 mini is not selling as well as the rest of the iPhone 12 series. The other side is that the iPhone 12 Pro sells better than Apple expected. This of course makes us wonder if the ‘mini’ form factor for this year will remain iPhone 12S or iPhone 13.
But it’s important to keep in mind here that Apple does not provide unit sales for any hardware product. As such, we will probably never know how many iPhone 12 mini units Apple has sold compared to the rest of the iPhone 12 series. The only data we have comes from analysts and supply chain reporting.
Earlier this week, Morgan Stanley analysts reported that Apple had switched 2 million units of Q1 production from the iPhone 12 mini to the iPhone 12 Pro. This investment note further confirms that sales of the iPhone 12 series as a whole were higher than expected, while those of the mini were specifically disappointing.
So far, there has been no specific reporting on whether Apple will maintain the same range with this year’s iPhone 12S / iPhone 13 update. Macotakara has vaguely hinted that the series will look the same, but the details are unclear.
But just because the iPhone 12 mini does not sell as well as the rest of the iPhone 12 series does not mean that Apple will necessarily discontinue it. People who use the 5.4-inch device are big fans of it, it’s just more niche than Apple initially expected.
Personally, I think the iPhone 12 mini size will be another year. While niche, it offers Apple a way to keep the starting price of the iPhone 12 series at $ 699. We also do not expect any major design changes with the iPhone 12S this year, and it is unlikely that Apple will make shape changes with design changes.
What do you think? Will Apple discontinue the iPhone 12 mini form factor this year when they launch the 2021 iPhone series? Let us know in the poll below and expand in the comments!
