Interviews for the new poll, which took place from March 12 to 15, began the day after Biden signed the bill. The results should not be compared with previous POLITICO / Morning Consult poll questions on the bill, as the questions described its content. Biden’s government is proposing the new law and sending the president and other officials on their way as part of its ‘Help Is Here’ tour. While Republicans popularly support the law, GOP leaders hope that the expansion of other spending included as part of the measure, and the partisan vote to introduce it, will reduce their support among voters before the next election.
In follow-up questions, majorities also voiced support for two of the most important provisions of the law: the stimulus checks some Americans have already received, and the expansion of unemployment insurance benefits.
“The comprehensive, dual support for stimulus research is proof of the broad awareness that many Americans currently need a lifeline,” said John Leer, an economist at Morning Consult. “It’s no surprise that the expansion of unemployment benefits is also very popular: Americans recognize unemployed workers deserve additional financial support until job growth begins again.”
A little less than two months into his nascent presidency, Biden remains popular, with a 62 percent approval rating in the new poll. Only about a third of voters, 34 percent, disapprove of the task that Biden is doing as president.
The POLITICO / Morning Consult poll surveyed 1 993 registered voters and found a sample error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
