Colorado Governor Jared Polis and other elected leaders tweeted about the shooting in Boulder, expressed sympathy and expressed anger. Police said late Monday he mourns with all Coloradans and that “Today we saw the face of evil.”
State Representative Tom Sullivan also shared his condolences to victims and their families and outrage over the events. Sullivan lost his son in the recording at the Aurora Theater in 2012. “Simply do not have the words and do everything in my power to retain the strength I need today to get through. We do not have to live like that “We have to do more!” he tweeted.
Rep. Joe Neguse, who sits in the Boulder district, shared sharp words for the continuing tragedy that Americans are enduring.
“Twenty-one years ago, as a young student in Douglas County, I cried with many Coloradans over the victims of the horrific massacre at Columbine High ten minutes from my high school. Two years ago, I felt the fear that so many Coloradans were experiencing how the shooting was taught at the STEM school in Highlands Ranch, where my cousin – a kindergartener – was locked up while we all cried over the tragic loss of life, and tonight I weep over the families of my constituents, who suffered tragically losing their lives in another mass shooting. ‘
“Enough is enough,” he said in part.
“Americans need to feel safe in their grocery stores. They need to feel safe in their schools, their cinemas and in their communities. While Congress does not want to say, Americans – and Coloradans – are being killed before our eyes – day after day, year after year. . “
It does not have to be this way. There are steps we can take – and must take – to protect our community; common sense, broadly supported proposals that will save lives. If we are to truly invest in saving lives, we must have the willpower to act and to carry out meaningful gun reform. The time for idleness is over. ‘
