Police in New Jersey have died after falling into the septic tank of the campsite

A three-year-old girl has died in New Jersey after accidentally falling into a septic tank at a campsite, police say.

The Lower Township police station says it discovered the child at the Sun Outdoors campsite in Erma, near Cape May, on Saturday night after a 911 call for medical help.

“On arrival, officers found a 3-year-old woman who was not responding, who was pulled out of a sewer tank after she accidentally fell in,” the department said in a statement.

The child was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead later that evening. As of Monday, she has not yet been publicly identified and an investigation is continuing.

“The preliminary investigation revealed no signs of foul play,” Lower Township police said.

The death occurred when the campsite opened for the season this past weekend.
