A complete 1st edition of the original Pokémon Cards from 1999 was recently sold at a staggering $ 666,000 price. This collection is one of the top sellers in the history of collectible card trading and serves as a new benchmark for the ever-increasing sales that have taken place in the Pokémon space over the past year.
The sale itself took place through Goldin Auctions and not only contains every 1st issue card in the original set, but they are all classified according to the “Gem Mint” condition. If you have no idea what that means, it’s essentially the highest rating level when it comes to Pokémon cards with the “Mint” guideline that falls under it. Although the differences between the two rating levels are not large on paper, the Gem Mint rating could end up costing thousands of dollars more in a potential sale.
The crown jewel of the collection is probably in the form of a unique 1st edition Charizard card. In the past, this card has sold on itself for hundreds of thousands. Combining that with this larger collection has made the whole set just that much more valuable.
Pokémon maps as a whole have risen dramatically over the past year or so. Some of this is due in part to a general revival of interest from longtime fans who want to get some of the cards they had as children. However, those with money to blow, namely creators of content, have gone really crazy over the past few months and shed more light on the scene. This past week alone, YouTuber Logan Paul revealed that he spent an almighty $ 2 million on Pokémon cards, which is definitely something.
It remains to be seen whether this Pokémon card bubble will eventually pop up or that prices will just go up. At this current rate, however, it does not look like these original 1st edition cards will soon lose their value.
