Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro includes internal ND and optional EVF

Blackmagic today unveiled a new Pocket Cinema 6K Pro featuring features that everyone wants in a small compact body. The two major new features are internal neutral density and an optional EVF.

The new Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro now uses Sony NP-F570 batteries which work much better than the original Pocket which uses Canon LP-E6 battery. The lens holder is still EF and uses the same CFast-type media.
All Pocket Cinema Camera models include a full version of DaVinci Resolve Studio.

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema cameras have a mini-XLR input with 48 volt phantom power to connect professional microphones. The 6K Pro model has 2 mini XLR connections to record 2 separate audio tracks using 2 microphones, without an external mixer. The four built-in microphones have an extremely low sound floor and are shock and wind resistant. There is also a 3.5mm audio input for connecting camcorder microphones, a built-in speaker for playback and a 3.5mm headphone jack similar to the other current Pocket cameras.

The new Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro offers the same generation of five-color science as the URSA Mini Pro 12K and delivers accurate skin tones and true color. Featuring a new dynamic 12-bit gamma curve designed to capture more color data in the highlights and shadows, to see images better. The color science also handles the intricate Blackmagic RAW image processing, so that the data of color and dynamic range of the sensor are preserved via metadata that customers can use in the post-production.

Internal ND filters

Internal ND filters

The inclusion of internal ND is great. It has 2, 4 and 6 stop IR ND filters.
The IR filters are designed to filter the optical and IR wavelength evenly, which eliminates IR contamination of the images. Activation buttons are located on the back of the camera body, and are easily within reach of your thumb from the multifunction handle. By selecting the user filter settings can even be displayed as ND number, stop reduction or fraction on the LCD.

Cinema Camera Pro EVF

Screenshot 2021 02 17 at 11 01 27:00

It’s hard to choose which new feature is my favorite, but I think adding an optional EVF should be my best choice.

The new EVF Pro is a 1280 x 960 OLED color and an extra 33% of the screen is devoted to critical information such as frame rate, histogram, recording status, sound meters and more.

Screenshot 2021 02 17 at 11 00 37 hours

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Pro EVF has a range of motion of 70 degrees and 4 different types of eye-catchers, with options for left or right eye. The built-in proximity sensor not only activates the viewfinder, but also disables the LCD touch screen. This saves battery power and prevents you from accidentally changing the camera setting by pressing the touch screen buttons.

Battery grip

Similarly, the new Pocket has a Pro Grip battery that also uses two NP batteries, giving the camera a nice long run time. The Camera Battery Grip pro sells for $ 145 US.

The new Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro marks a number of boxes that the original models did not, and looks like an excellent option for all shooting conditions. One feature that has not been updated is improved autofocus or internal IS like IBIS.

The new Blackmagic Generation 5 Color Science will be available for all Pocket cameras in an upcoming update. This is good news if you want to add the 6K Pro to your existing Pocket cameras for Multicam work.

The Pocket 6K Pro sells for $ 2495, which is about $ 400 more than the Pocket 6K, and I think it’s worth every penny. The EVF is $ 495 and contains four eye cups.
