PlayStation VR 2: new controllers unveiled

Sony has taken a first look at the new controllers for PlayStation VR 2, which will combine finger-tracking with the PS5’s haptic feedback and customizable triggers to provide a “deeper sense of presence and a stronger sense of immersion in VR experiences” . ” Unveiled on the PlayStation Blog, the new controllers drop the old-school PlayStation Move wand design for a more ergonomic set of peripherals that fit around the user’s hands. The new controllers are “spherical” and allow a more natural fit without restricting the player’s fingers.

In terms of available new features, the peripherals will use many of the best features of the PS5 DualSense, including Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback to boost immersion and input voltage.

Finger touch detection will also be implemented in a similar way to Valve’s Knuckle controllers. In essence, the controller will be able to locate your fingers without pressing the buttons. Sony says it will allow “more natural gestures” during the game.

The controllers will also have a follower ring at their base and will be followed by the PlayStation VR 2 headset instead of the PlayStation Camera. On each side is an analog stick, a grip button, a trigger button and two button input. The left controller also has a Create button, while the right controller contains the Options button.Sony says prototypes of these new controllers will soon be in the hands of the development community, adding that “there is still so much to share about the next generation VR on PS5.”

PlayStation VR 2 was confirmed in February this year, where we learned that the new headset will connect to the PS5 via a single wire and will have a better resolution and field of view. Sony has also said it will not launch this year.
