The headset also comes with the introduction of a new PSVR controller (which replaces the PS Move rods), which features some of the key features in the DualSense wireless controller, as well as a focus on excellent ergonomics. ‘
However, the headset will not be available this year: “There is still a lot of development going on for our new VR system, so it will not be launched in 2021”, reads the blog post. “But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans as the development community began working on creating new worlds that you can discover in virtual reality.”
In an interview with GQ, Jim Ryan, CEO of SIE, confirmed that there is no official title for the headset, and that the development kits are “about to go out”. Ryan also described it as an “all-new VR format for PS5”. Ryan indicates that we will learn more about the new headset later this year.
Working on a successor to PSVR has been a bit of an open secret thanks to reports and patents showcasing PlayStation’s field investments. Over the years, Sony has filed patents for VR-compatible prescription glasses, a new potential PSVR controller (which includes research on a Valve Index-style controller, a patent to spoil spectators with players in VR, and much more) And job listings have shown over the past year that PlayStation has been working on a “next-generation VR headset”.
