PlayStation Store Ends Purchase and Rent Movies and TV Shows

Fans of PlayStation Store will soon need a new location to rent movies. Sony announced on Tuesday that it was terminating its ability to rent and buy movies and TV shows from the PlayStation Store. The change will take effect on 31 August.

The good news for PlayStation movie renters is that it will not take long to get a replacement. Services like YouTube, Amazon Prime Video and Vudu are some of the biggest movie rental programs in the world and are all available in the PlayStation Store.

According to Sony’s blog post about the change, the biggest driver behind its decision was the increasing use of subscription and ad-based streaming services, not just those that allow rentals. And the PlayStation Store also has plenty of options, with services like Netflix, HBO Max and Peacock.

While the ability to rent through the PlayStation Store disappears, it’s not the content you purchased. Sony’s statement assures customers that movies and TV shows they have already purchased in the PlayStation Store will continue to be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and mobile devices.
