As we enter the new year with some countries considering new closures to guard against increasing cases of COVID-19, PlayStation Plus subscribers will have a handful of new free games to keep them busy. It includes a new free PS5 game that replaces Bugsnax from the launch of the console. This month, subscribers can pick up Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Greedfall on PS4, as well as the Shark Simulator Maneater, which is exclusive to PS5 for free. You have a few days left to pick up December’s games. Do not miss your chance to get them before they are gone!
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the most recent installment in the reloaded Tomb Raider series, bringing Lara Croft’s ongoing adventure into the jungles of South America to save the world from a Mayan apocalypse. As the classic AAA adventure game you would expect, GameSpot’s review of Shadow praised the thrill of exploration and the challenge of solving ancient tomb mysteries, but warned that the game’s traditional mechanics can make the journey frustrating.
Greed is a 2019 RPG featuring players tasked with exploring a mysterious island called Tar Fradee, filled with magical secrets to explore and monsters to hunt. The game caters to traditional RPG fans with character formations that consist of different abilities, gameplay and skills and objectives that can be accomplished in a myriad of different ways. GameSpot’s review of the game favorably compared its compelling reconnaissance and combat mechanics to Witcher 3, though it did criticize colonialist themes.
Maneater is this month’s exclusive PS5 game – although it’s also available on PS4, only players on the PS5 will be able to redeem it for free. Maneater is described as a ShaRkPG, an RPG where you take on the role of a man-eating shark. Start as a puppy, and the player has the first task to survive and then thrive as one of the best predators in the ocean. Just like RPGs with human characters, you can customize your shark’s skills to your style of play as it grows in size and power.
As with previous PS + games, all the January games are PS4 titles that can also be played on the PS5. The next console, recently launched, can play most PS4 games, with improvements ranging from games, including reduced loading times, more stable frame rates, and increased resolutions. Only a small handful of PS4 games are not supported on PS5, and the list has already started to shrink.
Greedfall’s developer has announced that the game will get an update and additional content for the PS5 and Xbox Series X / S, although it is still unclear if it will be a free update for all next generation gamers.
December’s free games – Just Cause 4, Rocket Arena, Worms Rumble and Bugsnax (for PS5) – are still available until January 4th.
