PlayStation Indie games: all the revelations and announcements today

Sony is announcing today or offering updates on 7 PlayStation indie games, and we’ll be posting all the news here on the shelves as it happens. Keep in mind that this post will be updated at this time, so feel free to check out all the latest announcements.

Operation: Tango

Asymmetric Collaborative Puzzle Game Operation: Tango begins this spring. In the espionage adventure, an agent player sees places, while a hacker player helps them do so. The game will also launch on PS5, as well as the previously announced PS4, Xbox One and Steam versions.

We showcased the game at Gamescom 2020, and the PlayStation blog dives into its multiple art styles, telling us that the game will range from office burglaries to fast chases.

Chicory: a colorful story

This adventure game about a dog using a magic paintbrush to explore and solve puzzles was funded on Kickstarter earlier this year. It has now been announced for the release of PS5 and PS4 this spring.

The game sees a world strewn with color, with the player being asked to manually paint it back to life, and it offers personification as well as enigmatic. On PS5, the game will use the DualSense touch pad to control the brush (with a left-handed option), and the developer has rumbled on a very soft texture that makes the whole thing feel warm and cozy, like petting a cat. ‘

Nour: Play with your food

Nour: Playing with your friend looks the most fun way after a hockey trip. Nour, published by the same company as Untitled Goose Game and coming to PS5 this summer, and is a game where you play with your food, and the music and sound of the game will respond accordingly.

By using ‘adaptive background music’, Nour’s tunes and sound effect will shift depending on what you do to the (extremely nice) food in front of you. Different foods correspond to different sounds; you can move them around, make a mess and even blow into the microphone for different effects. In a PlayStation blog post, developer Terrifying Jellyfish’s Maximillian C Mueller describes ‘noodle harps’, airy marshmallows, ice cube grand pianos, turning toasters into drums and a meat grinder on heavy metal.

The video above explains it best by showing how food interacts with sound, but Mueller also sums it up best in the blog with an example:

“The best example of physical instrumentation in Nour is the noodle harp. Make some noodles, arrange them using the magnet to form an elegant slope (or sample) and freeze it. Although there are many ways you can choose to play the harp is one of my favorites to make a gyoza tumble through the image to create a descending melody. ‘

Where the heart leads

A man’s dog slips into a sinkhole, so he then goes in and ends up on an unexpected journey. In Where the Heart Leads, husband and father Whit Anderson are visited by memories of his past, present and future. What’s more, he can change it as he goes and turn his life and the lives of others in a very different direction.

Where the Heart Leads is a narrative game focused on decision making throughout one man’s life. Developer Tod Keller of Armature Studio says the game was inspired by titles like Heavy Rain, Oxenfree, Xenogears and Vagrant Story, and features the influences of David Lynch, Wes Anderson and Nicolas Winding Refn.

It appears on PS4 and PS5 on July 13th.
