The Pixel Slate was announced in October 2018 as manufactured by Google’s first tablet and flagship, touch only Chrome OS device. After two years, the Pixel Slate is no longer in stock and is being discontinued in the three countries in which it started.
Updated 1/20/21: At the beginning of last month, we reported on how the Pixel Slate was not in stock in the US, Canada and the UK. Inventory did not return in the intervening weeks, and the Google Store today completely removed the product list. It is also no longer shown under the main “Pixelbook” tab. The Pixelbook pen has also been removed, though replacement tips remain available.
Original 1/12/20: The Pixel Slate is defined by a 12.3-inch 3000 × 2000 (293PPI) LCD that supports the pen input of the Pixelbook Pen. ‘Molecular Display’ is – as it is marked – flanked by speakers on the left and right, while an 8-megapixel ƒ / 1.9 ‘Duo Cam’ is above. The inspiration for the wide-angle front is clear, while there is still 8MP ƒ / 1.8 at the rear which also supports 1080p 30FPS video recording.
In the upper right corner is the home of a Pixel Imprint fingerprint sensor that also serves as the on / off button, while there are USB-C ports on either side of the device that charge the 48Wh battery for up to 12 hours.
Powered by Intel processors, there were originally five variations. The entry-level $ 599 model at launch was powered by an Intel Celeron with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. For $ 100 more, you have the same dual-memory chip and eMMC. While Google focused on affordability, the two offerings were performance-oriented. In the last year of the Pixel Slate’s life, three models were offered at custom prices:
- $ 499: 8th generation Intel Core m3, 8 GB RAM, 64 GB SSD
- $ 599: 8th generation Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD
- $ 899: 8th generation Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD
Google has introduced both entertainment and productivity issues for its tablet. The latter was aided by an official keyboard case which was connected via pins and had round sickles. The USB-C ports support 4K version output for a docked configuration. By design, all units were available in Midnight Blue, and the device weighed 1.6 pounds for a soft thickness of 7 mm.
In general, standalone Chromebook tablets – as opposed to convertible 2-in-1s – should not start as a form factor yet. Android applications were the biggest appeal, but the experience was lacking, and more optimized experiences were found on the internet. Chrome OS tablets are likely to have more luck at the cheapest.
About eight months after the Pixel Slate was announced, Google has confirmed that it is moving away from first-party tablets and focusing on laptops, as seen in the Pixelbook Go. The Pixel Slate is no longer for sale, as the original Pixelbook had a similar status in September.
The Pixel Slate is currently ‘out of stock’ in the US and Canada, while in the UK it is listed as ‘No longer available’. We reached out to Google to confirm that the Pixel Slate is ending.
