Pixel phones offer the best of Google – bugs and everything. The flagship Pixel 5 contains a lot of good stuff, but it also occasionally seems like a more frustrating feature: an error that causes all system sounds to play at a maximum volume, no matter how soft you try to set it.

For those affected, the problem affects all system sounds on the device, from touch sounds to dial-up sounds to camera clicks. Some claim that it also affects other sounds, such as the WhatsApp voice recording button tone, but it does not affect the ringtone or notification volume, despite the fact that the system sounds are presumably controlled by the same scroll bar. It makes everyday things like taking a photo or grabbing a screenshot stick out like a sore thumb – especially when you’re close to other people.

Setting the ring signal and the volume of the messages on silent works well, but even a small step on sets all the sounds of the system to maximum.

Our own testing confirms the presence of this problem on the Pixel 5. It seems that Google’s latest device does not match its sound levels of the system with the ring and notification levels like other phones like the Pixel 4 XL.

Hopefully we’ll see Google issue a fix in the next monthly security fix. Until then, there are a few things you can do to reduce the annoyance, such as muting camera sounds from the Camera app settings, or turning your entire phone so as not to disturb before take screenshot – but it does not appear there is any real solutions just yet.

We can confirm on one of our Pixel 5s that the January 2021 patch indeed solves the problem of the loud sounds as it is again controlled by the slider.
