The Pirates agree with the left hand Chasen Shreve on a minor contract, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN (Twitter link). The deal will guarantee him $ 1.5 million if he picks up Pittsburgh’s MLB roster per Passan. The Pirates meanwhile announced the move.
Shreve, 30, comes off with a decent 2020 season with the Mets, where he hit a 3.96 ERA / 3.45 SIERA over 25 overs. Impressively, Shreve hit a third of the batsmen he faced, a career-best point that finished twentieth among the 141 relays with at least 20 overs. In this regard, the swinging strike rate of 17.1% of the Shreve was thirteenth among that group.
It’s a bit surprising that a left-handed person ends up with the kind of swing-and-miss stuff for a minor league deal, but Shreve has been susceptible to both runs and home races over the course of his career. It continued last season as he allowed four home games (1.44 HR / 9) while being above the average 11.8% of opponents.
Nevertheless, it would still be a surprise if Shreve did not earn a spot on Pittsburgh’s major league series due to the spring training. At the moment only Austin Davis and Sam Howard left-handed relief roles occupy Pittsburgh’s 40s.
