The broadcaster has now confirmed that Piers has left his co-host role of three days a week in their flagship breakfast program.

In a statement, a spokesman said: ‘After talks with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided that now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”

The news comes after TV watchdog Ofcom confirmed it had launched an investigation into the program, after receiving more than 41,000 complaints about Monday’s episode.

It said it would investigate the program under the rules of damages and violation.

Piers’ comments come after Meghan told Oprah Winfrey during her American TV interview how there was a time when she “didn’t want to live anymore”.

She continues: ‘I said I had to go somewhere to get help. And I said I’m never felt that way before. I have to go somewhere. And I was told I could not, because it would not be good for the institution. ‘

On the next morning’s issue of GMB, Piers said: “I’m sorry, I do not believe a word she says.”

While co-presenter Susanna Reid shared her shock over Piers ‘lack of sympathy, he continued:’ I would not believe her if she read a weather report to me, and the fact that she was making this attack on our royal family fired, I think is contemptible. ”

Piers’ comments were previously condemned by the charity Mind, which works with ITV on the British Get Talking initiative.

“We were disappointed and concerned to see Piers Morgan’s comments about the fact that she does not believe Meghan’s experiences of suicidal thoughts,” the statement said.

‘It is extremely important that people are treated with dignity, respect and empathy when asking for support or sharing their experiences of poor mental health. We are currently in talks with ITV about this. ”

The next day, Piers was leaving during an on-air series with colleague Alex Beresford about the Duchess when the weather presenter questioned his repeated criticism of her.

Alex slammed Piers’ “devilish behavior” after storming out of the studio, saying, “I’m sorry, but Piers spits regularly and we all have to sit there and listen. Six-thirty-seven o’clock [on Monday] was incredibly difficult to look at. Incredibly hard to look at.

“This … he has the ability to come in here and speak from a position where he does not fully understand.”
