The Press Information Bureau’s fact check also tweeted ways in which citizens can safely surf the Internet. PIB has repeatedly asked citizens to be careful before going to fraudulent or suspicious websites. PIB also stressed earlier that after the onset of the pandemic, there was an increase in cases where people were deceived by fraudsters while buying items such as hand cleaners, PPE kits and masks.

Along with GDP, large banks, large telecommunications companies and government institutions such as the Employee Provident Fund and the Income Tax Department are constantly asking citizens not to share confidential information and not to receive calls to ask for the same.

Here are some tips for Internet users to follow while browsing the Internet –

  • People are advised to use a secure internet connection while surfing the internet

  • Sometimes Google searches refer to a warning message, in the address bar a page with a crosshair will appear next to the icon of a web page. This indicates that the site may contain malicious content
  • Keep your firewall and antivirus programs up to date
  • Malicious websites often have grammatical errors in the text of the website, which also serve as an indication that the website may influence users.
