Phillies Series: Typing Changes While Phils Set Record for Offensive Disability

Frustration increases with the offense of the Phillies.

It sounds like Joe Girardi is ready to take a look at someone new at the forefront.

And you have to wonder if the team is getting ready for Act 4 in midfield.

The Phillies had plenty of chances to win the ball game Monday night against Gabe Kapler’s San Francisco Giants, but time and time again runners lost 2-0 at their base at Citizens Bank Park.

How small?

How does 0 for 8 sound with runners in points standings?

The Phils left 11 men on their base, mostly against right-hander Kevin Gausman, who hit six pointless innings for the Giants. Bryce Harper had three of the Phillies’ seven hits. Everyone was single. Jean Segura’s 200th career doubles was the team’s only hit outside the base.

The Phils, now 8-8, have scored three of fewer runs in five of the last seven games and just six runs in the last three.

They get sad production for the front spot and from midfield.

In fact, the Phillies have not conceded a hit from that day’s starting center in 13 games – or since April 4, the third game of the season. No team has ever gone so long without a hit from the starting center of that day, at least since records began in 1906. The Chicago Cubs of 1965 played 12 games without a hit from the day’s starting center player. The Phils now own the record.

Mickey Moniak started in midfield on Monday night and scored 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. He is 0 for 12 with eight goal kicks in four games since being added last week.

Overall, Phillies center-backs hit 0.089 (5 for 56) on the season with a .203 base percentage and a .107 pass percentage.

“Well, we’re not happy about what’s going on,” Girardi said. “In a sense, we are at our third center. Mickey gets a chance and we will continue to give him a chance. I know they are all capable of hitting a much higher cut, they just do it for whatever reason. But we need someone to be productive out there. ”

Roman Quinn, the other half of the midfield position, is 1 for 23 (.043) with a 241 percent on base. Adam Haseley, who shared the season with Quinn, took a leave of absence from the team.

If things do not turn in midfield, baseball operations president Dave Dombrowski will make changes. Maybe he’s bringing up Odubel Herrera. Maybe he will trade.

“Yes, I’m worried about a lack of production in midfield,” Dombrowski said before the game. ‘We need more production outside the position, there is no doubt about it. We did not get the offensive production we needed.

‘Right now Mickey is getting the opportunity; I’m sure he will play against right hand. We also have other alternatives that we can choose from at Triple A.

‘But you’re always open-minded, too. No one is doing the work at that particular moment; you need to keep your mind open to other opportunities outside the organization. We have not yet reached that point, but for that you have always opened your mind. But you also need to make sure that you will be upgrading your situation as you move.

‘Hopefully it will come from within at this stage. If they do not get started, we have Herrera and we have (Scott) Kingery at Triple A, and we’ll see how they do. “

Andrew McCutchen, the captain, won 0 for 4 on Monday night. His batting average is lower to .157 (8 for 51) and his percentage at base is just .306.

Girardi said he could possibly make a change up front on Tuesday night.

“I might do something else,” he said.

Segura, who scored 0.345 with a 0.371 base percentage, appears to be a candidate to look at the top of the batting order. He does not walk much, but he strikes and few others. The Phillies team’s batting average is just .234. Surprisingly, it is the middle part of the major.

“We need more production and these guys are capable of producing more,” Girardi said. ‘I see that the averages have decreased throughout the league, and there are some numbers that are shocking to me. I think we’re a little shocked by some of our numbers, but we can turn it around tomorrow. That’s the wonderful thing about this game. We’ll get a chance tomorrow. ”
