Philadelphia police officer shot while stopping in West Somerville Avenue in the Logan area of ​​the city

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A Philadelphia police officer was shot dead in the Logan area of ​​the city on Wednesday night while having a traffic stop.

It happened on the 1500 block of West Somerville Avenue just before 19:00

According to Sgt. Eric Gripp, with the Philadelphia Police Department, was shot at one officer as he approached a vehicle during the traffic stop. A total of five officers in full uniform were at the scene to help before the gunfire erupted.

When one of the officers approached the vehicle which was occupied by four people, Gripp said that a 24-year-old man had manufactured a pistol inside and started shooting.

All five officers fired back and killed the 24-year-old armed suspect. A weapon was recovered at the scene. It is still unknown how many shots were fired by officers.

Gripp says the officer was shot in the foot and is currently in a stable condition in the hospital. Commissioner Danielle Outlaw and city leadership are currently with the officer and his family in the hospital.

The three other occupants of the car, a woman and two men, were not injured. They are currently being questioned by police.

Gripp says it is still unknown at this time what brought the traffic line to a standstill.
