Philadelphia police investigate 2021 first murders

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – Philadelphia police are searching for several suspects after a violent New Year’s Eve. Officials say at least ten people were shot dead in the city overnight, and three of them were fatally shot.

The first murder of the new year took place in South Philadelphia.

Police say a man was shot on the 100th street of Ritner Street around 12:30 p.m.

A 37-year-old victim was shot in the thigh, officials said.

Neighbors told Action News outside the camera that the man was walking around the corner to Fitzgerald Street trying to get help from door to door.

Officials say he was pronounced dead at Jefferson University Hospital.

Just before 02:00 a shooting took place in the 2100 block of Walnut Street in an apartment.

According to police, a 22-year-old woman was shot in the arm and hip.

The woman, whose identity is still unknown, was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police say there was an arrest in this incident.

Another murder took place in an unknown location, officials said.

The victim walked into the Emergency Department of Temple Hospital with a gunshot wound and collapsed around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

No arrests have been made so far.

A third murder took place around 4:30 a.m. Friday on the 2500th Street of South 66th Street in Southwest Philadelphia.

Police say a 26-year-old man was shot during a party in the basement of a house.

Detectives hope witnesses who were at the party will come forward with information about the shooter.

Neighbors say they have heard parties at home before.

“I just do not understand it. If they were to stop holding the parties, it might stop, but the violence should stop,” said Coral Chambers, who moved to the neighborhood less than a year ago.

Capt. Scott Drissel of the 12th Police District says he hopes all areas of the city’s criminal justice system can work together to reduce the murder rate in 2021.

“We are not the only ones in the criminal justice system. We need everyone to work together, even during a pandemic,” Drissel said. “Because crime does not stop.”
