Pharmacies begin vaccinations with COVID-19 in Missouri on Friday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Edited News Release / KY3) – Following the White House’s recent announcement of the launch of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program for COVID-19 vaccine administration, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has learned that federal partners have selected 102 retail pharmacies has to join Missouri in an effort to make vaccine effective for any suitable Missourian.

“We welcome the opportunity to work with our federal partners and provide an additional way for Missourians to receive a COVID-19 vaccine,” Governor Mike Parson said. “This partnership will be a great help in expanding access to vaccines and getting more doses into the arms as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

Eighteen Walmart and Sam’s Club pharmacy locations begin receiving vaccines from a federal grant (not from the weekly state grant) and vaccinations begin Friday, Feb. 12 at participating locations in Missouri. In addition, 21 Health Mart independent pharmacies in Missouri will soon also begin receiving and administering vaccinations. According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), the federal program is being gradually implemented based on the available vaccine supply, with select retail pharmacy facilities offering COVID-19 vaccine to eligible individuals. As the availability of vaccines increases over time, the program will be expanded to eventually include all 40,000+ pharmacies across the country.

“We are grateful that we will be making these additional doses of our federal partners available to Missourians soon,” said Dr. Randall Williams, director of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), said. “In discussions with the White House and our federal partners, these pharmacies were selected by them in the designated areas because of their accessibility to many Missouri communities and the trust that pharmacies have built with their patients.”

Apart from the limited weekly allocation from the state, the 102 retail pharmacies in Missouri need to receive a total of more than 18,000 doses per week. Qualifying customers can schedule an appointment with vaccinations through the Walmart and Sam’s Club websites as soon as appointments are available, making it easy to be vaccinated while the award lasts.
