Pfizer withdraws emergency requests for its covide vaccine in India

Pfizer is still committed to making its vaccine available in India, a company spokesman said

New Delhi:

Pharma Major Pfizer said on Friday that it had decided to withdraw its emergency permit application (EUA) for its COVID-19 vaccine in India.

Pfizer was the first pharmaceutical company to apply for an emergency use authorization from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) for its COVID-19 vaccine in the country, after obtaining such clearance in the United Kingdom and Bahrain.

“Following the emergency authorization for the COVID-19 vaccine, Pfizer attended the meeting of the Subject Committee of the Drug Regulatory Authority of India on February 3. Based on the deliberations during the meeting and our understanding of additional information that the regulator sees may need, the company has decided to withdraw its application at this time, ‘a company spokesman said in a statement.

Pfizer will continue to enter into discussions with the authorities and submit its approval request with additional information, as it will be available in the near future, the statement said.

“Pfizer is still committed to making its vaccine available for use by the Government of India and to following the necessary path of emergency authorization authorizing the availability of this vaccine for any future deployment,” the spokesman said.

Pfizer filed with the drug regulator in December 2020 to request permission to import the vaccine for sale and distribution in India. 2019, official sources told PTI.
