Pfizer plans to use the mRNA technology to make new vaccines for other viruses following the success of its Covid-19 shot, developed with German partner BioNTech, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

The drugmaker said it was ready to pursue mRNA on its own based on the experience it had with the COVID-19 vaccine over the past year, the WSJ reported, citing an interview with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla.

However, it did not release any details about the viruses it is targeting.

Pfizer and BioNTech did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccines, which are authorized for emergency use in the United States, use mRNA technology.

The success of the technology is leading drug developers to consider its use in medicines other than vaccines, which attract billions of dollars in investment.
