Pfizer CEO says the third COVID booster shot is likely to be needed within a year

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla on Thursday predicted that people who received the COVID-19 vaccine would probably need a third booster shot within a year to maintain protection against the virus.

“It’s extremely important to suppress the pool of people who are susceptible to the virus,” Bourla told CNBC.

The pharmaceutical chief said that it is also possible that people should be vaccinated against coronavirus annually.

Pfizer had already said in February that it would test test increases in case it was determined it was necessary.

Moderna, the rival whose vaccine uses a so-called messenger RNA platform similar to that of Pfizer, also said it was testing boosters shots.
