Peloton warns owners to keep children away from their careers after a child dies

CEO John Foley sent a letter to Tread + owners on Thursday, saying the warning came after a “tragic accident involving a child and the Tread +, which resulted in an unthinkable death.”

He did not disclose details of the fatal crash, but he did note that Peloton was “only aware of a small handful of incidents with the treadmill + where children were injured.”

In general, exercise equipment as a category can be particularly dangerous for children: 25,000 children under the age of 10 are injured annually by exercise equipment, according to a study by the U.S. National Institutes of Health in 2014. In 2019, the Commission estimates for Consumer Product Safety that U.S. emergency departments treated 2,000 treadmill-related injuries in children under 8 years of age.
Peloton (PTON) said in a statement to CNN Business that “there are no words to express the shock and sadness that everyone in Peloton feels as a result of this terrible tragedy.” The company will not disclose any additional information about the incident “out of respect for the family and privacy.”

Recommendations to help children stay safe

“We design and build all of our products for safety,” Foley wrote. “But to help you ensure that you and your family members stay safe with Peloton products in your home, we need your help.”

According to Foley, Peloton recommends that customers love children and pets at all times. Before a workout, they need to make sure the area is completely clear – and once they are done, they need to remove the safety key from the treadmill (it needs to be inserted to make the machine work) and store it out of reach.

NIH also recommends placing treadmills after the doorway, or using a mirror to improve visibility when children are in the household.

The NIH study found that people of all ages injure themselves on careers like any other exercise device. Americans report 46,000 treadmill-related injuries annually – more than four times the number of stationary bicycle accidents, the next most dangerous type of exercise equipment.

Careers consist of two-thirds of injuries to exercise equipment, even though it’s only a quarter of the exercise machines, NIH said. The group did not break out how many children are specifically injured by careers.

Peloton’s Tread +, which costs $ 4,295, features carbon steel and aluminum, as well as a motorized tire for walking or running. The company recently unveiled a lower price for $ 2,495 which is expected to be available at the end of May. Both have large screens to stream Peloton classes
