Pelosi gets ‘sharp’ when asked about AOC during ’60 minute interview

House President Nancy Pelosi gave an extensive interview to ’60 Minutes’ which was broadcast on Sunday night, and one of the highlights was when correspondent Lesley Stahl asked her about the party’s future leadership.

Stahl pointed out that Pelosi is 80 years old, and Steny Hoyer, leader of the House, is 81, and she asked why there are no clear heirs in the party. Especially since “The Squad”, the group of young progressives, commands such a large following on social media.

Pelosi told Stahl that the question is essentially based on a false premise. She replied that party leaders had taken care of future leadership, and perhaps she was not aware of it.

“Why do AOCs [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.] complain that you did not care for younger people for leadership? asked Stahl.

Pelosi replies: ‘I do not know. You’ll have to ask her, because we are. ‘

It seems Stahl was surprised for a moment and said, “It was a little sharp, to fire her.”

Pelosi said that was not her intention, saying that AOC ‘is very effective, just like others – many other members in our caucus that the press does not pay attention to. But they are there and they build support for what comes next. ‘

Ocasio-Cortez told The Intercept in an interview published in December that Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, minority leaders of the Senate, should no longer hold the leadership positions in the party. She said the party has little interest in caring for future generations.

‘I think one of the things I struggled with – I think a lot of people struggle with it – is [that] the internal dynamics of the house have made it so that there is very little option for follow-up if you will, ‘she said.

Pelosi also once caught the media’s attention when it appeared she was belittling Ocasio-Cortez’s victory over Representative Joe Crowley in the 2016 Democratic primary. She said a “glass of water with a D” could win in these democratic strongholds.
