Patrick Mahomes tried to get Trent Williams to Kansas City

The Chiefs beat the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV. In the rush to tackle Trent Williams, the 49ers received a small refund.

Via Matt Barrows of TheAthletic.com, the Chiefs put pressure on Williams. Clearly, he chose to stay with the 49ers.

As Barrows explains, quarterback Patrick Mahomes became directly involved in the recruitment, with a ‘strong pitch’ via text and phone calls aimed at getting Williams to join the two-time defensive AFC champion.

Mahomes and Williams know each other, and their hometowns in Texas are about 30 minutes apart.

Per Barrows, it was not enough to overcome Williams’ bond with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan. It dates from their time together in Washington.

The Chiefs will now have to address the vacancies on their attacking line elsewhere. They added Joe Thuney, but their attempt to get Williams shows they are not done.
