Several patients at a Kroger location in Virginia who were hoping to receive the COVID-19 vaccine were reportedly accidentally injected with an empty syringe, according to a local report.
A health worker at the site in Kroger, Chesterfield County, was “under the impression” that a colleague was filling the syringes before the patients came in for their appointments, local news station WRIC reported. Less than ten people were injected with an empty syringe.
The patients affected by the crash were later contacted to return for the actual vaccine, according to the news station, which added that the Virginia Department of Health was subsequently contacted and ‘along with the [the Kroger location] on this issue. ”
Vaccinations have since been trained to administer the vaccine.

“We apologize for this oversight and the inconvenience these customers are causing,” a Kroger spokesman said in a statement to WRIC.
“It’s a Herculean effort by the government and the private industry to work together to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible. Mistakes are going to happen in this process, I think it should be expected,” said one patient who vaccine at the Kroger location said. “But I think we need to take it fast, and it should definitely not stop anyone from looking for the vaccine or getting the vaccine.”

A similar incident occurred in January in Colorado when an 82-year-old woman who was to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at a local vaccination clinic was also mistakenly injected with an empty syringe.
