Parents respond to Michigan’s masking mandate extended to children as young as 2

Michigan has expanded a COVID-19 order that implements restrictions on events, restaurants, entertainment venues and more.

The state Department of Health and Human Services has expanded the mask requirements to include children ages 2-4.

The order runs until May 24th.

Dane and Tiffany Teal, who are parents of the upcoming 3-year-old Davis, said they are concerned that the state’s new rules could put parents in a difficult place.

“Perhaps many people do not understand two-year-olds, and especially our two-year-olds. He is a master negotiator. “He is good at getting what he wants and if he does not wear a mask, he will act like a two-year-old,” said Dane Teal.

‘Very likely they’ll take it out and drop it. “It will probably get dirty if it ends up on the floor and then they have to put it on their face again,” said Tiffany Teal.

Dr. Rudolph Valentini knows it will be a struggle to disguise toddlers, but he believes the benefit outweighs the inconvenience.

‘The mask is a two-way street. “It protects the person wearing it and the person on the other side of the mask,” said Valentini.

The Teals said they would make the effort, but like many parents, they have no problem giving up the white flag if it gets too fierce.

‘I do not expect him to keep it up all day. “I’m not going to force it too much and upset him,” said Tiffany Teal.
