Parents, health workers respond to Michigan’s new mask mandate

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The state has expanded its epidemic order to help stop the coronavirus from spreading. It comes with a new rule – to set up masks for toddlers.

Some people say they are losing confidence in the orders, while experts believe more should follow the rules.

Lansing resident Matthew Moorer said: ‘Are you trying to get a two-year-old? I mean, he’s almost one and he does not even know how to walk yet. Ever let go of wearing a mask on his face to keep everyone safe? It’s a bit. ‘

Medical director of the health department in Ingham County, dr. Adenike Shoyinka, says although it may seem a little strange to include children in the health order, the change is necessary.

“Children get it and they can be asymptomatic, but then they can possibly spread it to other people,” Shoyinka said. ‘Of course we know that children at that age can not yet be vaccinated. We have a way to go before then. So, the more reason why children younger should wear the mask. ”

Mason resident Sarah Wood does not believe the mandates and vaccinations. She believes people should start taking care of their bodies.

“If you strengthen your immune system, you are less likely to get an infection or virus of any kind,” Wood said. “If you do get it, you’re likely to fend it off effectively.”

On the contrary, registered nurse Tina Ray says she agrees with the expansion. She says the community as a whole is not out of the woods yet. Ray said: “The variant is going through our community and there are currently a lot of patients in the hospital.”

Ray says she hopes people will take this order seriously because nurses in hospitals are on the verge of exhaustion.

“A few weeks to possibly reduce our exposure could help us,” Ray said. ‘Because we’re exhausted in the hospital. And the nurses and healthcare professionals are struggling to make a decision on which patient to go to first. It’s overwhelming. ”

While the previous mask mandate still applies. The one where children are from two to four years old only starts on April 26th. The order still allows indoor dining in restaurants up to 50%. And 100% capacity for outdoor seating.
