Panthers strengthen defense on first official day of free agency

The 26-year-old Reddick is the big fish, but also a familiar face to the Panthers staff.

He played for Panthers head coach Matt Rhule and defense coordinator Phil Snow at Temple (with 9.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss as a senior), and he finally looked like the player they know last season .

Reddick was the Cardinals’ 13th overall pick in 2017, but managed just 7.5 bags in his first three years, and never flashed in the same way as in college. He flourished last year, with 12.5 pockets and six forced whispers in Arizona.

Reddick is not the prototypical size for a pass-rusher, but the Panthers are not worried about templates for defense.

Between Brian Burns, who is an end-linebacker hybrid, and Jeremy Chinn, who can play safety and linebacker, the Panthers are comfortable with guys who are not easy to define.

The 28-year-old Perryman gives the Panthers a solid presence in the middle and fills the place left when Tahir Whitehead became a free agent.

Perryman was a second pick in 2015 and started 51 games for the Chargers. He’s a classic linebacker, and he gives them some flexibility with the use of Chinn and Jermaine Carter.

Fox, 26, adds a versatile fit to the front of the Panthers. He had 6.0 bags for the Rams last season, and his ability to play inside or out gives them another piece to move around.

All they did offensively was add two entrees to a line.

While the Panthers were able to tackle Taylor Moton right with the franchise label, the only starter under contract was center Matt Paradis.

Five other attacking lineouts from last year’s team became unlimited free throws on Wednesday – left tackle Russell Okung, left guard Chris Reed, right guard John Miller, and retained Michael Schofield and Tyler Larsen.

Elflein and Erving give the Panthers experienced options that many of the subjects Rhule keeps in players notice.

Elflein (26) can play multiple interior spots and give them an immediate starting guard and potential future coverage in the middle (Paradise has one more year left).

Elflein, who was a former third-round pick of the Vikings from the state of Ohio, started 49 in four seasons (which ended with the Jets last year).

Erving (28) is even more versatile with the ability to play all five positions. He spent last year as a swing suit for the Cowboys, but also played center and guard during his time at the Browns and Chiefs. The former pick in the first round started 47 careers, and probably has the first opportunity to take over the left handle.

It’s been a busy week. But when Fitterer stepped in before sunrise on Thursday, he knew there was more work to do.
