Panthers offer 8th choice for Matthew Stafford, details on other offers

As the dropout continues to flow in from some of the short players Matthew Stafford/Jared Goff trade, we have some new details about the talks that led the Lions. The most important thing is that the Panthers Albert Breer of SI.com presented the eighth overall choice in the draft this year as well as a later choice. Many people would argue that this is a better offer than Detroit took from the Rams, two future first rounds (which may be late), a third player and Goff’s inflated contract.

By accepting the deal, the Lions would have made the seventh and eighth picks this April, giving them a bunch of ammunition if they wanted to advance to one of the top quarterfinals. Clearly, they do not view Goff and his contract as a major negative like many others, and this offer from Matt Rhule will probably be the one we look back on the most when we think about this trade in the coming years. If nothing else, it just shows how serious Carolina is about upgrading from Teddy Bridgewater, and we heard they were getting ready for an aggressive run Deshaun Watson.

Washington presented the 19th choice in April as well as a third round choice, writes Breer. The Colts selected packages, but never made an offer that includes, for the first time this year, the 21st choice. Although the 49ers did show interest, they never made a formal offer, noting that they are happy to recover. Jimmy Garoppolo.

The Broncos also showed interest, but Breer says it soon became clear that the price is much higher than the new GM George Paton was willing to pay. The Patriots was willing to pack a second player with a defensive player, although of course it would not have the chance, and Stafford apparently had no interest in going to New England and again with Matt Patricia anyway.

Interestingly, Breer notes that the Jets booked the weekend. All the other teams were strongly linked to Stafford, but New York would have been a game card. Obviously, the talks went nowhere, but it’s worth noting that the Jets are at least considering rolling in with a veteran passerby instead. Sam Darnold or a rookie with their second overall choice.

So what do you think? Are the Lions foolish because they do not take the eighth choice and run with it, or will Goff prove some people wrong?
