Pandemic kills family video; chain to close remaining stores

It is highlighted by Family Video, the 42-year-old Midwestern chain that has held even as a Blockbuster and Hollywood Video burst.

The company said Tuesday that more than 250 stores nationwide will hold liquidation sales and offer deals on movies, video games, downtown products and stores.

While streaming services and other online competitors have long dived into his business and helped bring about the downfall of other video chains, it was the coronavirus that was the final withdrawal from Family Video.

The chain, like other non-important retailers, had to close for 60 days from March, but was also interrupted by film interruptions and delayed release due to the pandemic.

‘Even though we’ve been facing digital competition from Netflix and others for years, nothing has been as devastating to our business as it has been. Covid-19, “the company said in a news release distributed to various media.

“We are very grateful that we were able to provide entertainment for many family movie nights,” said Keith Hoogland, CEO of Highland Ventures, a company in Glenview, Illinois that owns Family Video, in a statement.

The chain, which was founded in 1978, started with 510 establishments in 2020, but by the end of the summer it had to close about half.
