Padres Place Dan Altavilla Choose Nick Ramirez on 10 Days IL

The Padres placed a right hand Dan Altavilla on the 10-day injured list due to inflammation on the right elbow, the team announced. In corresponding motions, southpaw Nick Ramirez‘s contract was selected in the big league, while he is left Matt Strahm was moved to the 60-day IL to create a 40-man position for Ramirez.

It’s an unfortunate quick return to the sidelines for Altavilla, who were only activated on Wednesday from a ten-day IL activity. A calf injury was the cause of Altavilla’s previous absence, and the referee appeared in two games for the Padres before hitting the IL again. Altavilla allowed a solo homer for the Dodgers’ Luke Raley in Friday’s game and so far, an ERA of 6.75 has pitched more than 1 1/3 innings in 2021.

Altavilla, which was acquired last August in the big seven-player deal with the Mariners, has shown some quality flashes since the start of the 2016 season, but also a lot of inconsistency over 116 MLB innings. Altavilla has an ERA of 4.03 and a sell-out rate of an average of 26.1% over his career, but both runs (12.1BB%) and home games were a problem for the Righteous.

Ramirez signed a minor league contract with San Diego in December and will now appear in his third MLB season. The Southpaw posted an ERA of 4.28 with more than 90 1/3 innings at the Tigers, with 79 2/3 of the frames that would occur in his 2019 rookie season, but he has only 10 2/3 in 2020 innings over five games.
